CTRL+x: this will exit the file
CTRL+w: this will allow you to enter a phrase to search the file

CTRL+v: this will advance the file to the next page

Now change hostname in Ubuntu or any Debian variant Linux, modify the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts.

sudo nano /etc/hostname

Change the old hostname to a new hostname.

sudo nano /etc/hosts

Change the oldhostname to a new hostname,

After changing the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts, you need to restart the hostname service duh..

The Kernel

The Kernel is the “core” of a Linux operating system. Without it you have a box with useless hardware. The purpose of the Linux Kernel is to manage the hardware, memory, system and device drivers, etc..

Without getting to technical, if you took a working version of any Linux distribution and deleted your /boot directory (were the kernel resides on your directory), upon reboot you wouldn’t get passed the boot loader. You would just stare at a blank screen OOPS!. So the kernel is most important piece of software on a Linux machine.

Everything Else

Most people, when talking about Linux are talking about the whole suite of programs that most distributions use in order to productively use Linux. Now ‘productively’ is a subjective term. For most desktop users, you want to be able to navigate your computer in a point and click manner, but Linux can run purely from a command prompt. This is the preferred way for system administrators. They do not need a robust GUI to set up a web server. The server will work with or without the point and click interface. As I am writing this tutorial, I am running Ubuntu with the fluxbox window manager and using gedit to write this. For you, you might choose a friendlier desktop environment like KDE or GNOME

This is the greatest thing about Linux, it’s flexibility. With Windows you are forced to use their desktop environment and a lot of other programs. With Linux, you can become the designer. You can pick and choose how you want your system to look, act or behave. All without breaking any license agreements.

If you are reading this, maybe you are not running Linux or are thinking about testing it out. So lets continue with a basic system setup:

For the sake of simplicity, I will consolidate Linux into three different levels:

The Command Line

When you install Linux with just the basic essentials, you will get a text-based login prompt. Once you login you are greeted with a command prompt:

[root@localhost#/home/root]

This will look different depending on your system, but it’s a basic prompt to tell you that you are logged into the system and the system is waiting for a command.

This mode acts like MS-DOS but is more robust. This environment is well suited for system administrators who run computer ’services’ (like a web server)

X Window System and Window Managers

The graphical user interface (GUI) is the point and click environment most Windows users are most familiar with. In Linux, the GUI can be so many things, you are not forced to use any particular program.

It all starts with a program called the ‘X Window System’ or simply ‘X’. ‘X’ is the first program that starts in order to control any input device (keyboard, mouse, etc…) and the output (computer monitor). You can run X by itself, but it won’t look pretty. You will get a basic grid like background and you will be able to move the mouse around. That’s about it.

In order to create ‘windows’ and better manipulate your environment, you need what is called a ‘window manager’. Besides stating the obvious, a window manager allows you to move windows around, minimize them to a taskbar, etc… It all depends on which window manager you use. You can run Linux quite well just using a window manager. In fact, most power users prefer this method.

Some popular windows managers are: fluxbox, blackbox, WindowMaker, FVWM, FVWM95

The Desktop Environment

A desktop environment is a suite a programs that run on top of X to create a user friendly system. This is by far the closest you can get to Windows without using Windows. Their are three basic desktop environments:

1. KDE – If you want a fully functional Windows replacement, KDE is a great choice.

2. GNOME – Built for speed and simplicity This desktop environment is better suited for power users.

3. XFCE – If your system runs on older hardware, or need to conserve system resources, XFCE is a great alternativeto GNOME

A group of gamers from Lafayette, Indiana have announced their second Mario Marathon in benefit of Child’s Play, an organization funded by the creators of Penny Arcade that brings toys and games to hospitalized children worldwide.

A team of three players will play through 25 years worth of Mario games across all Nintendo consoles. The event will start on July 10 and will end on July 15. The organizers hope that this event is bigger than least year’s, which gathered over $12,000 dollars for Child’s Play and lasted 57 hours. Viewers also have the opportunity to interact with the team and win Mario-related prizes.

Whether for the limited-time savings or an eager need to ditch Vista, preordering of Windows 7 has been immensely popular at certain online retailers. Amazon.com in particular has handled quite a number of orders placed for the operating system, with the majority of people buying the $49 upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium. As it stands, the package is ranked as number one at the retailer’s electronics products section, beating all other software and electronic gadgets on the site.

Microsoft’s pre-retail success with Windows 7 is not exclusive to the US either, with several reports around the web suggesting that demand has exceeded the company’s expected supply in Japan. As far as ad campaigns go, Microsoft hasn’t played up Windows 7 nearly as much as they did Vista, so why the demand? – Especially after such a short time since Vista’s release. Whatever each individual’s reason for upgrading is, it seems Windows 7 is off to a good start but can it keep it?  That is the question people want find out.

From Friday through July 11, consumers in the U.S. will be able to buy an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home premium for $49 or Windows 7 Professional for $99. That offer is good for both XP and Windows Vista PCs, regardless of whether someone has been trying out the pre-release version of the operating system. That matches the details in a memo from Best Buy that leaked earlier this month.

When boxed copies of Windows 7 go on sale on October 22, Microsoft plans to charge $119 for Home Premium, $199 for Professional and $219 for Ultimate. The Home Premium upgrade is down $40 from the product’s original price, although the Vista product had already gotten a price cut along the way. The Professional and Ultimate versions are priced similar to where Microsoft was with Vista. The upgrade prices apply to those moving from a previous version of Windows to Windows 7, but only those from Windows Vista will be able to upgrade without doing a clean installation of the product.

The full versions of Windows 7–the editions for those without a copy of Windows–will be priced at $199 for Home Premium, $299 for Professional and $319 for Ultimate. Pack your bags stay a wile because if your on a windows 7 beta right now and want to update its going to take you a long time. In sort Microsoft has remade the installation process of windows 7 and to make sure there they have made it right they are making people go back to vista and then upgrade with the new beta version of windows 7.

For the people that are no aware there is a msn virus and its a little harder to get rid of than most viruses in the wild today.

So what dose this virus do we are not sure exactly. I have seen this virus grow from user to user but when it stared I thought it was a glitch.

What it dose is it sends your msn contacts a broken link when you are offline. Then your friends take a look at what they think are pictures from a party and the virus gets downloaded from what looks like a broken page.

So how do you get rid of it. Well as of right now you cant but it doesn’t look like its doing much harm. There is no evidence that I have found of it stealing information from your computer but it very well can be. I am testing this in a virtual machine in the meantime. Some say by using a program called hijack this might stop it but I have not tested it.

Some would say it is meant for the gen Y market as a lot of apple products are

For me its the reliability I have had to many mp3 players and multimedia devise to know that its just reliable

Knowing the youth of to day I think it mostly a trend. If its something that everybody has than everybody is going to want it. The reason I got mine is because someone stole my Cobby mp4 player from work I will end up reviewing this later.

When I whent to the Wal-mart to buy the Itouch I found it to be a very good and reliable little devise so the answer to this is there is no answer. there is a very wide difference between why people want them but as long as they like it I don’t see why its a problem.

I have had this drive for some time now and of course there are the good then there are the bad.

we can start off with the cons;
First off its not really sixteen gigs.
Its more like fourteen.

Memory companies round up how much memory they have on there cards. The other con is that this is one of the flash drives that the dongle slides out
but the slide feels cheep
and I feel like I have to be careful when sliding the stick out
and the roundup of memory.

I can understand if they did a couple MB.
But 2 gigs of a round up is pretty much taking away a whole flash drive
I think they should have advertised a 14 gig instead of a 16.

Now these flaws should not stop you from buying this drive as it is actually quite good.There is a data light. its a blue led that flashes when data is being ether sent or transferred.

Its quite reliable I haven’t had any loss of memory if I do a unsafe removal
and I would say that the memory is good for achieve if your backing up.

I picked this up for about $50 CND  taxes included.                                                                                                                                         You might be able to find this for about $40 street.

Watershed is a cloud computing service, with pricing on a pay-as-you-go basis. Security mavens at Mac anti-virus provider Intego say Trojan-horse software dubbed OSX.Trojan.iServices.B hitches a ride on pirated copies of Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Mac that are being distributed in warez channels. A program used to generate a valid serial number to unlock the Adobe app installs a backdoor on machines that makes them part of a botnet.

The discovery comes four days after Intego warned of a trojan that piggybacked off illicit copies of Apple’s iWork 09 productivity suite.

The trojans aren’t the only threats in the wild preying on OS X users. According to researchers at anti-virus provider Kaspersky, two new applications that claim to offer anti-malware protection for Mac users have recently been spotted. Rogue anti-virus programs have long been the bane of PC users. Now they’re becoming increasingly common on the Mac platform as well, Kaspersky researcher Sergey Golovanov says.

No doubt, the debate about security of the Mac will continue to rage, with some claiming it is a harder platform to attack compared with Windows and others saying it remains relatively unscathed only because its considerably smaller market share makes it less of a target to cybercriminals. What should be fairly well settled is the reality that these Mac-tailored social engineering attacks are now a fact of life. Like their Windows brethren, OS X users who install pirated software or are otherwise careless do so at their own peril.
